Nutritional Comparison between Hemodialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis: Single-center Experience in Korea -Assessment of Nutrition with Anthropometry and Infrared Interactance-




Abstract
The assessment of nutrition is an essential component in the total care of the ESRD patient. In a cross-sectional study for the nutritional status, forty-six patients on hemodialysis(HD) and 30 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal
dialysis(CAPD)
were evaluated. The assessment include anthropometric measures of height, weight, triceps skinfold thickness(TSF), and midarm circumference(MAC). Infrared interactance for body cmposition(body fat, lean body mass) by Futrex5000 and biochemical
measures(serum albumin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, total cholesterol0 were performed. (1) The two groups were no statistically significant difference in mean age, height and body weight. (2) There were significant differences in the mean
TSF(12.93¡¾0.83mm vs. 15.36¡¾1,27mm), but the mean of MAC(23.91¡¾0.43cm vs 25.86¡¾0.47cm) and MAMC(19.86¡¾0.37cm vs 22.0¡¾20.59cm) values were similar between the two groups. (3) % body fat(20.11¡¾098% vs. 24.484¡¾1.31%) in infrared interactance
higher
in CAPD patients than those in HD patients, but no significant difference were found between two groups in the lean body mass(44.40¡¾1l06kg vs 43.75¡¾1.34) in infrared interactance. (4)The mean serum blood urea nitrogen was significantly lower in
CAPD
patients(77.1¡¾3.1mg/dl vs. 9.4¡¾0.6mg/dl) and albumin(3.7¡¾0.06g/dl vs. 3.5¡¾0.09g/dl) were similar between HD patients than CAPD patients. (5) total cholesterrol(135.7¡¾5.0mg/dl vs 188.6¡¾6.3mg/dl) was significantly increased in CAPD patients.
We
observed here better calorie nutritional status on CAPD patients than HD patients.
